Volleyball has been around for more than a century and it has been a favorite pastime for countless individuals. Throughout the years, the game itself and the required equipment have been developed in response to the changes in the era of its existence. If you are a fan of this internationally accredited sport, then set your volleys and your black volleyball knee pads aside for a short while.
Get ready to read about the origin of volleyball and specific events it went through before only six players were allowed to play on the court, before three hits within a team were permitted, before players wore uniforms with cute little black volleyball knee pads, and before it was even called volleyball.
In the year 1895, volleyball was officially named Mintonette by William G. Morgan, its creator. However, as years progressed, the name was changed to volleyball as derived from the observable actions of volleying the ball over the net. In addition, there were also notable changes in the rules of the sport. For instance, originally, there was no limit given regarding the number of times the ball can be hit during the play and there was no restriction concerning the number of players permitted inside the playing field.
At present, those limits exist through the ruling of authorities giving consent to only six (6) players per team for a set, and allowing only three (3) valid hits within the members of the same team before doing the ball return toward the opposing team. The latter was approved in the year 1920.
Making use of the combination of basketball, baseball, and tennis, William G. Morgan of the Springfield College of the Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) made this unceasingly loved sport. His objective was to provide an enjoyable activity for amusement, in the form of a sport, for businessmen during their lunch hours.
In line with this objective, it should be mentioned that basketball was a very much considered sport, especially with its notable prominence. However, Morgan thought of it as too arduous. Hence, he developed another game and ever since, it has been received warmly by many. Actually, in 1916, South America started setting their nets up and wearing their black volleyball knee pads as they received the sport in such a manner.
That same year, the Philippines, already hooked on the game and wearing their own versions of black volleyball knee pads, started to develop an offensive attack known as the bomba, a combination of a set and spike. Of course, Europe was able to get in the bandwagon. In 1924, Paris hosted the Summer Olympics which had volleyball as an American Sports demonstration event.
The years that followed brought even more changes. Three decades after the 1924 Summer Olympics, women wore their uniforms and black volleyball knee pads playing in national competitions. Then, they reached the international level. The rest is history and to this very day, simply everyone and anyone interested can most likely experience the fun and enjoyment brought by volleyball.
